Leadership Pause: What’s keeping me from getting there?
Pause and Reflect
Leadership Pause is designed to give you a 10 minute break—a chance to open yourself to different perspectives and new ideas. Start by listening to some music while you breathe and clear your mind.
Expand My Perspective
Now focus on the image (play the music again if it helps). Let your mind wander as you think about these questions:
What’s happening in this image?
What stands out to you?
What memories or emotions does it evoke in you?
If you were in this image, where would you be?
Personal Application
Where is “there” for me?
What might hold me back?
What would it look like to finally arrive “there?”
What message does this image hold for me?
Focus on Action
What’s one takeaway from this Leadership Pause?
What’s an action I can take to move myself closer to “there” than to “here?”

Questions Leaders Ask
In this week's Leadership Reflection, we explore the gap between where we are and where we want to be. Most leaders can identify goals, aspirations, or desired outcomes. The challenge is often not knowing where we want to go—it's understanding what may be preventing us from getting there.
Why do people struggle to reach important goals?
Progress is often influenced by more than effort alone. Limiting beliefs, competing priorities, fear of failure, uncertainty, lack of clarity, habits, distractions, and competing commitments can all slow movement toward meaningful goals. Understanding what is creating resistance is often the first step toward overcoming it.
How do I identify what is holding me back?
Start with curiosity rather than judgment. Ask yourself what patterns keep repeating. Are there fears, assumptions, habits, or distractions that consistently interfere with progress? Sometimes the greatest barriers are external, but often they are internal beliefs or behaviors that operate beneath our awareness.
Why is self-awareness important for growth?
Self-awareness helps people recognize the thoughts, emotions, habits, and assumptions that influence their choices. Without awareness, people often continue repeating the same patterns while expecting different outcomes. Reflection creates opportunities to make more intentional decisions.
What is the difference between being stuck and being uncertain?
Being stuck often involves knowing where you want to go but struggling to move forward. Uncertainty involves not yet knowing the destination, the path, or the next step. Both experiences are normal parts of growth, and both benefit from reflection, exploration, and curiosity.
How can leaders move closer to their goals?
Progress often comes through small, consistent actions rather than dramatic changes. Clarifying priorities, identifying obstacles, creating accountability, developing new habits, and taking manageable next steps can help leaders build momentum toward meaningful goals.
Why do people sometimes avoid pursuing what matters most?
Important goals often carry emotional risk. Success may require change, vulnerability, difficult conversations, uncertainty, or letting go of familiar patterns. As a result, people may unconsciously delay action even when they genuinely desire the outcome.
What role do values play in personal growth?
Values provide direction and help people determine what is worth pursuing. When goals align with deeply held values, motivation tends to be stronger and more sustainable. Reflection can help clarify whether current actions support what matters most.
What is Conflict EQ?
Conflict EQ is the ability to remain grounded, curious, and constructive when tension, disagreement, or difficult conversations arise. Personal growth often requires confronting internal tensions, competing priorities, and uncomfortable truths. The self-awareness developed through reflection supports the same capacities that strengthen Conflict EQ.
